Road tax has to be paid in case you purchase a vehicle. The road tax in Maharashtra is regulated as per the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Tax Act, 1968.
The rates are decided by the state authorities and the collection of the tax is done by them as well. The tax money that is collected is used by the state government to improve security and road quality.
Age of a vehicle, make and manufacturer, fuel type, length and width of vehicle, engine capacity, purpose (personal or commercial use), place of manufacture, and many other factors come into play when the payable road tax in Maharashtra is calculated.
It’s worthwhile to mention that seating capacity and number of wheels of a vehicle are also used to calculate road tax. The transport department levies a road tax equivalent to a certain percentage of the original vehicle cost, ensuring that taxation is standard across different vehicle categories.
The vehicle type will determine that amount of road tax that must be paid:
Type of Vehicle | Tax |
Above 299cc | 12% of the vehicle’s cost (minimum of Rs.1,500) |
Between 99cc and 299cc | 11% of the vehicle’s cost (minimum of Rs.1,500) |
Up to 99cc | 10% of the vehicle’s cost (minimum of Rs.1,500) |
The tax that must be paid will depend on the number of years since the first registration was made and is mentioned in the table below:
