Advance tax has to be paid by every taxpayer who has tax liability of more than Rs.10,000 for the year before the year of assessment. Senior citizens have now been offered the option to not pay advance tax provided they satisfy certain conditions.
Section 208 of the Income Tax Act states that each and every taxpayer or assessee who has a tax liability exceeding Rs.10,000 for the year prior to the assessment year is liable to pay advance tax.
However, there are some exemptions when it comes to senior citizens. Senior citizens who do not run a business or have a profession are exempt from paying advance tax.
In a bid to make life easier for senior citizens, and to reduce their overall burden of tax compliance, Section 207 was ratified in the financial year 2012 - 2013 to state that senior citizens will not have to pay advance tax provided the following conditions are fulfilled:
